A short bullet-hell made in 10 days in which you will be taking on the role of a gilled heroine who's fed up with robots mucking up her waters. This was made for 2 jams:

Bullet Hell Jam 5 , Pixel Game Jam 2024

------

The Rundown:

Eau (ˈō / Oh ) master of aquamancy, expert bubble slinger, one woman army is on a mission to drive robotic invaders out of her home and she's attacking where it hurts most, their supply chains. In this little bullet-hell your enemies mostly consist of cargo  and scouting bots whose only method of attack is flinging the remnants of their energy after their demise. In other words, the projectiles you must avoid are only created upon the destruction of your enemies. And you can't just avoid destroying them because letting them go by unscathed quickly sets you back. It's a bullet-hell of your own making, for the most part. There are also bosses that'll assist in the bullet-hell shenanigans by covering the screen with their own bullets. Fortunately for Eau, you can dive under the water to avoid them, but you won't want to do that for too long. You can't attack while underwater.

Controls:

W, A, S, D or Arrow Keys to move

LMB or Z to shoot

Space or RMB to dive

P or ESC to pause

The Themes:

Bullet Hell Jam 5: Consquences

The majority of enemies only create projectiles when destroyed to tie into the theme of consequences. It also influenced the plot, what little there is. Muck up fish girl's waters, fish girl get angy.

Pixel Game Jam: Aqua

Of course, "aqua" inspired most of this.

Oh, what a cute fox-eared mermaid! I like the detailed graphics on the title screen, it makes the pixel art in the game more realistic for me.

The enemy barrage is generally caustic, but the main character's diving ability to go through it all, however, is very interesting, as the dilemma is that if you stay underwater, you can't defeat the enemies and your progress will decrease.
And the third boss felt very strong.
I thought it was probably because the boss's hit points were so small that I had to move and attack while I was moving, but the boss's attacks themselves were also so powerful that I couldn't attack for any length of time.
But it was a great feeling when I was able to beat him!

And I planned to overwhelm the boss with 3-ways and bombs, choosing only the ones that increase green enemies in the upgrade, but it didn't work and I lost the game. But it was fun because I was able to be unmatched in the fight against the mooks.
Now I want to play to just slow down my progress in the small fry battle, get all the power-ups, and then take on the boss, meow~!

Thank you for the detailed review and showcasing my game! It's great to see people interact with what I've created. You're actually the first person I've watched play other than myself. I had no play testers 😁. If I did I probably would've balanced the game better. That third boss, for example, is certainly a difficulty spike. And seeing that many of the players are saying that it drags, I plan to make the game faster when I'm able to update. Part of that will be a faster XP rate so you'll be able to hoard those power-ups even more quickly!

Why did you remake the cover?

The previous cover was made in just a few minutes using pre-existing art from the game, so it felt underdeveloped to me. I also wanted to try an anime style with subtle shading and this seemed like a good opportunity. Sorry if you preferred the old cover

No, the new one looks good as well. Just curious

the vibes are really great. The art is also really nice. good work!

Thanks! Glad to hear you like the vibes

It doesn't work well on web's version and i have a question. ¿¿Why is the main character so sexualized?? I don't understand the need of doing this kind of things. If it is only to gain more visits... sad. It doesn't add anything to the game. Unnecesary and gross.

Anyway, the idea it's interesting and fun. It looks pretty clear and cute.

Thanks for the compliments! It's not just the web version that has issues. I was fighting bugs all throughout development and I know there's still a few. And about the sexualization, that's partly for the clicks and partly for me. I enjoy looking at sexy women and I enjoy drawing them (^//ω//^)

Women don't exist for you to looking at or sexualize.

HOLE LEE   Though I died on the first boss, I found that this first level gives this game steam-worthy vibes! Best game I've tried so far. Also, diving feels really good, it's the cheeky move I always wanted in this sort of game. The boss's HP is so massive, that while I was fighting the boss, the next Unreal engine came out :P I got him down to 15% or so but then I was toasted by the slightly buggy looking fire. Good stuff!!!

I'm happy you enjoyed it! Calling it steam-worthy makes me feel good about what I made. And I'm happy you like my diving mechanic idea. One thing that bugs me about a lot of bullet-hells is that they force you to practically crawl around the screen to avoid damage. Also, I do agree I could make some balancing changes like adjusting the bosses' HP. Maybe in a future update I'll fix some things
