2 Button Lucy
This is a short, top-down shooter made in a couple of days for:
2 Buttons Jam 2023

You will play as a little pink bear named Lucy who is on the hunt for some food. Winter is nearly upon her so it's time to stock up and go into hibernation. But she's super picky. Not just any food will do, only honey will satisfy her. One may argue that it isn't even food but what can't be argued is that it's dense with calories making it the perfect thing to fatten her up before winter. Yep, she wants to get fat. Healthy foods like apples and carrots are a no-go. If you see them, blow them up!
The game:
You can move left and right with one of two movement buttons and pressing them both at the same time will fire a projectile. The goal of the game is to collect honey and get a good score.
Controls:
Movement options:
A and D,
X and Z,
Arrow Left and Arrow Right,
or
Mouse Left and Mouse Right
-> Press both movement buttons at the same time to fire a projectile <-
(I'm not sure if different options break the 2 button rule but I like adding options)
Honey:
Honey will reward you 250 points and restore 1 HP.
Fruit and Veggies:
Coming into contact with these will subtract 1 HP and clear the screen momentarily. Destroying them will reward 100 points.
Woodland creatures:
There are 3 creatures out and about that will disrupt your activities. Coming into contact with them will also subtract HP and clear the screen. Attacking them rewards varying amounts of points.

The Theme: Sleep
One of my first ideas for dealing with the restriction of 2-buttons was exactly this game, mechanically at least. It took me a little while to think of a way to implement one of the three theme options of the jam: Tower, Sleep, and Maelstrom. I eventually chose to work with "Sleep" and made a bear who wants to hibernate.
If you want a score to beat my high score is 139,570

I like the way this game works with the 2 button limitation! It is really fun to play even with the sudden difficulty spike, and I like the art and artstyle (yes including the mascot, I get why others don't like her but I don't really mind either way)
I'm happy you like the gameplay and art! I predicted the mascot might look too suggestive for some but I didn't think she'd be this divisive. It's good to know that about everyone seems to like the art either way though
its pretty fun! I really like the rasterization lines & the limited colour palette. the music and sound effects are fitting.
I wont lie I'm not a fan of the mascot, its a bit... lewd for my liking lol. the difficulty curve could also use a little smoothing, i felt myself getting a little bored before the transition to lvl 2, but a bit overwhelmed as soon as lvl 2 started.
good insight to make the player hitbox larger than the zone of control from the bullets, stopping you from cheesing the game by hugging the wall.
Not a fan of Lucy? (ಥ﹏ಥ) That's fair though. I made the art that way as a joke for myself and a couple of other people. About the difficulty curve, I agree it could be smoother. I think I'll tweak a couple of things before submissions are due
Congratulations on finishing the game!
Beautiful pixel art, a character on the logo, a banner above the game, effects during the game and a retro screen!
I also like the idea of shooting with two buttons - it makes moving and shooting more meaningful.
I like that over time the screen begins to become increasingly filled with fruit obstacles and turtles, making the search for honey increasingly difficult. I also really liked that you have to fight with bees for honey, which makes you rush straight to a piece of honey and do risky and stupid things.
As for the game itself, I think it's a bit long. Difficulty and speed grow slowly, honey heals you, which makes the player very durable - I was not afraid to rush into the breach for honey, because the extra life compensated for everything. Due to the fact that the game does not end, and I have to click a lot, my hand hurt.. I decided that I had enough honey and deliberately ran into an obstacle in order to lose.
Here's my record 119650, looks like it's time for me to hibernate :)
Thanks for your detailed feedback and for the compliment on the art! I agree that it feels like it goes on long especially the build-up to the difficulty spike. I wasn't sure how long players would need to get used to the gameplay so I went the safe route. And yeah maybe the player is a little too durable. I should've made the honey spawn less frequently or something else to balance it.
really clever combining the two buttons to create a third input! managed to get 32 honey and a score 0f 79940 :3
That's a pretty good score! And thank you for the compliment
really fun mechanic.
Thank you! I'm happy to see that others find this fun
Hey! This game is pretty fun. And made with only two buttons. God Dang!
Thanks! Making a game that uses just 2 buttons was a fun challenge
